Can I Get This Done?

Today I have to figure out how I am going to get pitches/proposals for four shows done soon.  Not that there’s a rush. I should get them done so just the same. Part of this process if for me to help shape my stories a lot stronger than i have in the past.  It will take a lot more effort that I put in projects in the past, and will keep working towards professionalism and excellence.

With this in mind I want to buckle down and throw my inner-censor out the window.  I also want to embrace character-driven stories, so that means thinking more of the emotional stakes of the characters.  That doesn’t always shine through at the initial stages of my writing, but if writing is rewriting, then I know it’s a matter of time before I get there.

As I mentioned yesterday, I love plot-driven stories, and I have had a steady diet of them, but I’m willing to try new methods of storytelling to reach my goal of becoming a full-time televisions writer-producer who creates his own shows.  I also eventually want to help others reach their goals, but one step at a time, right?

Happy creative endeavors.

Falling off the Wagon

It’s odd, sometimes I fall off the writing wagon. This time I feel had.  There aren’t really any good excuses. There are always upheavals and chaos within my give day.  Yes the tempest was a lot stronger this time, and I did find myself overwhelmed with life, but I always knew I’d get back on the writing wagon.

Getting back on means starting with a blog post.  Let me also say that while I wasn’t blogging, I did some light writing. A few written journal posts, writing notes and researching ideas.

That said, I like to think I can step up my game. I even stopped gaming to get this post done, and I’d like to see me get some more concern rated writing done.

I’ve also been getting into the online classes on writing a lot more. I need to complete those assignments so that I can at least keep myself feeling like a true participant.

As always, happy creative endeavors.

When the Pane Shatters

Window pane, of course.  Yesterday consisted of me working on some lines and descriptions for a horror story. It was something to keep the hand and mind occupied-as opposed to buys. Busy to me meant my hand was simply moving, and mind darting all over the paper.

I want to push this further, since I keep getting my focus broken, so these staccato-esque sentences and fragments may help, and it keeps me writing, so I’m in favor of that.  Also I want to know what this is leading to.

On a side note, I was reminded that the fantasy script contained a LOT of horror elements, and this over three episodes was it’s one consistent element. I still need to make clear what the main character’s evolution is going to be.

Part of me says he needs to work better with people, another part says he needs to chill, while another part suggest he needs to close his cases and worry less on others.  More work to do.

Have a good weekend, and happy creative endeavors.

The Old New Script

Recently I reviewed my script I wrote for a fantasy TV show. Now that I have some lessons under my belt on writing better, I decided to look at the main character  (MC) and see what I thought.

The MC: the new, resourceful and cocky lawman in town who aims stop supernatural crimes, and not take anyone’s BS.

This is an ensemble story, he really shapes the pilot and how we see the world.

The second MC: Talented, aristocratic snot whose family pays a steep price for his escapades, and he must now stay obedient in order to prevent them from even more hostility.

Third MC: Insufferable, unorthodox  know-it-all who loves his secrets, and his authority unquestioned.

The fourth MC: Confident, bold, and witty librarian who would rather spend time out in the field rather than with old books.

I had other characters that appear, but I wanted the identify the “primary” four who I could describe into a sentence or two.

I did have one antagonist.  I was trying to figure out how to described him.

Antagonist 1: Brilliant chemist with a sadistic streak, and great contempt for the wealthy.

This is what I’m revising. Happy to look at it again, and at least get a handhold on the characters.

Busy

When thinking back on yesterday, I was ready to write I didn’t do too much, as I did get busier by the moment. In fact, I did write several thoughts down on characters and situations.

Even looked at an antagonist and viewed him two different ways that intrigued me (possessive/controlling/selfish and acting out of duty/purpose), The first was the initial thought, the second came after contemplating his role, and are all antagonists so predatory?

Well, nothing better than a tragic hero who’s fatal flaw has overridden his senses, AKA tunnel vision, AKA motive.  Even if I went all predator it could be depicted as someone who wants to do right, but ends up doing the wrong thing.  Internal conflict for the win.

These ideas came after I wrote about writing a horror series and I wrote about a protagonist who was being stalked.  I then asked myself if this would work with a previous concept I was developing.

Also started working back on the TV show concept with the dysfunctional family.  Trying to distill the premise into two concrete sentences. It sounds simple until you try it out.

Man with the abilities to bend space and time creates “do over” business with his dysfunctional family. As his company succeeds, his family and friends relationships implode, and rivals attempt to control or destroy him.

Will eventually replace the word “man” with a character name, and tweak the premise a little more.

Genre Challenges and Ideas

For the record, I did get some writing done yesterday. I had an idea for a character’s background, and added it to my Moleskin. I was constantly interrupted, but still managed to get it down. So that’s a good thing.

Also spent time contemplating genres and ideas. I tend to skewer towards the fantastical, and that’s fine. I was curious if I could create works in other genres as well. This is me simply having some free time to debate what I could do outside my favored choices o genre.

I also began to think of a horror-themed TV show because why not? Partly I want to know if I could scare myself, but I also like supernatural stories and dark theme, but never thought to put it into a show or a film.

I wouldn’t be unprecedented. Several supernatural shows have horror built into them. Supernatural comes to mind, as does Charmed, American Horror Story, and X-FilesX-Files used to have some scary episodes back in the day.

There was a Dracula TV show–the actual title escapes me, but it had an unintentional, light camp aspect to it, which kind of pulled it away from horror.  I see they were going for a supernatural dramatic vibe, but it was kind of lost in the mix.

Happy creative endeavors.

The Genre

When last I spoke on this topic, I merely said it was a science fiction TV series. What I’m going to do is try to define it a little more.  Simply gathered some facts and see what I have written.

  • The Main Character (MC) AKA Second Son is the most powerful and influential man in the world, after it was believed he was killed, but surprises he’s back.
  • MC often converses with future self.  Future self may or may not have his own agenda to push.
  • The MC’s four friends are also back, but have NONE of the global effect the MC has, but don’t leave his orbit for too long.
  • The MC’s family has changed.  MOM renews relationship with MC, but on better terms.
  • Mom is also the head of the MC’s business.
  • Mom has several relations with various men, but none of them work for her, and she’s a master of being discrete.
  • Four people have a reason to go after the MC (the antagonists), but for different reasons.
  • First Son is attention seeking, and often in and out of problems.
  • Ex Husband is around, and hates having his free spirit clipped/hampered, but now wants son’s attention.
  • The world needs a stronger leader than they have, who can get things done, and that makes the MC the strongest, viable candidate.
  • MC could be the world’s first global emperor but no generals and not ready to solve everyone’s crisis.
  • Not everyone is happy that there’s a person with this much power they can’t gain favor with, or influence in some way.

I need to contemplate these facts, because I’m sure there are more questions in there.

Happy creative endeavors.
